COURAGE

I am devoting this entire week to COURAGE.

A good friend of my family, John Wayne, once said Courage is being scared as Hell, and saddling up anyway.  When I was in the Army at nineteen, my Drill Sergeant informed me that this was the US Army's official definition of Courage.  It is defined in the dictionary as the ability to confront fear, pain, risk/danger, uncertainty, or intimidation.  Of the two, I prefer Duke's way of putting it.  Either way courage is necessary to lead any sort of life that one could be proud of.  As a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, I embraced their medieval adage, live life not without fear, but with gallantry against it. I'm not sure if one is born with courage, or like other dimensions of character, it can be built upon.  I am however certain that, when necessary, it must continue to present itself in the lives of the individual and the
mentality of society, or all that's worth having is lost.
